If you're an oyster lover, you've likely enjoyed them in all their recipe version glory: Fried, raw, Rockefeller, and in soup. But have you tried oysters on the grill?If not, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Grilled oysters offer a unique, crispy addition to any outdoor gathering. So, if you want to fire up your grill at home, pour your guests some wine—or break out a cold beer—and give them a try, we've provided a few tips, and recipes, that will give you a whole new appreciation for this incredible delicacy.
Tips forGrilling Oysters
Make sure the grill has been preheated
Keep the heat at medium to medium high
Place the oysters cup side down
Be sure not to overcook oysters (They finish quickly)
Use tongs, or gloves, to remove oysters from the grill
Here are a few easy recipes you can try at home:
Grilled Oysters with Gremolata
Ingredients:2 cups bread crumbs2 teaspoons lemon zest2 teaspoons fresh finely chopped parsley3 teaspoons grated Parmesan 1 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon cayenne (or preference)⅓ teaspoon onion powder1 pound butter1/2 cup minced fresh garlicred chili flakes (to taste)Fresh juice of 1 lemonSalt (to taste)2 dozen shucked oysters ( set aside)
Directions:Melt a little butter on medium heat in a sauté pan, then add breadcrumbs, and stir until they are evenly toasted.In a saucepan, melt 1 pound of butter. Then, remove from the heat and add the remaining ingredients (except the oysters)Place the shucked oysters on a grill that's been preheated to medium, and drizzle a bit of butter on each one. When the oysters begin to curl a bit (This will only take a couple minutes) remove them from the grill, top with the Gremolata and serve immediately. Delicious!
Grilled Oysters Drizzled with Chipotle and Honey Butter
Ingredients:1/2 stick butter (softened)2 tablespoons quality honey3 garlic cloves, finely minced1 minced chipotle chili in adobo 1 dozen shucked oysters
Directions:Incorporate the butter, honey, garlic and chipotle in a medium mixing bowl. Refrigerate. In the meantime: Get the grill preheated to medium. Place a bit of the sauce on each shucked oyster and carefully set them on the grill. As soon as the sauce begins to bubble a bit (this will only take about 3 minutes) remove them from the grill to avoid overcooking. Pour the wine, and serve the oysters up quickly—while they're still bubbly and hot. Enjoy!
Grilled Oysters with Bacon
Ingredients:1 stick of softened butter 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice1 tsp. fresh minced garlic2 Dozen shucked oysters1/2 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce 8 strips of cooked and crumbled bacon
Directions:In a bowl. incorporate the butter, lemon juice, and garlic. Preheat the grill to a medium high heat. Place the shucked oysters on the grill. Top each one with a spoonful of barbecue sauce and a spoonful of the butter mixture. When the edges begin to curl (this is generally just a couple minutes) remove them from the heat.
